10.2 or 10.3 should work  -- anything earlier than 10.2 is not worth
bothering with ... IMO

I believe if you start another machine on the CD then  you can install to
the firewire target drive.
OR if you have  a good working config on another machine, use the new
version of CCC to copy just the essentials to the laptop drive.

Merry Christmas everyone,

I've been passed on an iBook (usb2) with only a 9GB HD.

Any idea what OSX system it should be able to take?

It seems to be having trouble starting up from CDs... is there a way to
install a System disk via a Target Disk mode?
