We just bought a Sony Memory stick camera (Sony Handycam NSCGC1). Although the picture quality is not that of a tape based camera it has the advantages os light weight looooonnnnnnggggggggg battery life and the ability to record up to 2 hours on a 2 gig card. Price was also a factor Just over $200 with card. Great for quick shooting by kids of all sorts of things. Footage can be imported to iMovie HD. This is done by going to File and Import rather than using the method used for tape based systems. Footage is usable for Podcasts and most short term projects. Longer term or "presentation quality" projects will still be shot on DV tape as this still appears, to me anyway, to be the highest quality footage to be had in consumer systems - and the cameras are the cheapest of the SD/miniDVD/Hard drive ranges.

Subject: [Maced] importing from miniDVD to iMovie
Wondering if anyone has had much experience with importing movie
footage into iMovie from tapeless camcorders...
I am starting to see a few students who want to be able to download
and edit their footage but don't know what to do, regardless of
whether they have a Mac or Windows computer.
It seems that some models may indeed be recognised directly by the
latest version of iMovie, but this is not the case for all.
The current problem is with a Panasonic VDR-D160 model. The best I
have been able to come up with is to
. connect the camera to the computer
. copy the files to the computer
. use MPEG Streamclip (with Quicktime MPEG-2 playback installed) to
convert the .VRO file
. export to DV
. import to iMovie
The quality seems OK, although the student noted that he could see
some blurriness.
No student I've spoken to seems to think that they would be likely to
get a miniDV camcorder if they were going to buy something, so I guess
this matter is going to become more of an issue.
As always, I would appreciate any feedback or thoughts.
Regards
Anne Taylor
