[Maced] Carnival Manager

Actually I downloaded it and entered test data

It is built in FileMaker Pro and simply pulls simple data between pages.

While it might be terribly useful, I can't see, from a development
perspective, why it is worth $200

A database is kept of the athletes, events, houses, and basic
preferences like the name of the carnival.
Simple look ups are used to combine the data into a rather non-
intuitive interface.

Because there are very minimal smarts included in the package, you
have to keep jumping between sections to configure the event and you
really need to sit down with the package for a while and learn how it
works.

Given that a full price, retail, copy of iLife or iWork costs $99,
Microsoft Office costs $249, and a program that let my phone control
my computer, change iTunes, puts presentation notes on my phone screen
and lets me change slides, and includes proximity and call sensing
over WiFi or Bluetooth so that my music turns down when I'm on the
phone is only $23.95, I believe the price for this is too high.

You would be far better off building this in PHP with MySQL. It
wouldn't take very long, would be customised to the school, could be
integrated into current services.

Then, once the proof-of-concept version was finished which would
replace all the functionality of Sports Carnival Manager, you could
look at configuring it to feed off the already established user list
in the Open Directory server (obviously writing the athletes list to
the database so that it would work even when the computer was not on
the network as is likely during a carnival) and it would work cross
platform without the requirement of any downloads. Could also look at
having it automatically roll the current events on screen on the day
so that you can easily tag the winners of events.
In carnivals where there could be some distance between the main tally
room and some events (athletics comes to mind) you would be able to
use an Ad-Hoc network in the field to establish satellite results
tables that allow real time feedback on events.
My brain is almost exploding with the possibilities :)
