Actually the 3G iPhone does support the Telstra NextG network (850
MHz) -
It Supports UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz)
2100 MHz is what Vodafone and Optus use in it current 3G network -
mainly in major cities
What it does not support is the 900 MHz band that Optus is using to
extend its 3G Network and its claimed 98% Coverage

Yes, 3G is a standard used by all except Telstra's "NextG" network
which relies on a different frequency (well done Telstra!). I'm sure
the phone will hop to another frequency (down to Edge speed??) to keep
you going but a pain in caused by Telstra's "planning for the next
world standard - THEIR'S!).

$1,000 question. No one is sure how they are being activated at
present. Version 1 of the iPhone you did it yourself on the Web.
Version 2 has rumours that "you'll have to take it to a authorised
Mobile provider to unlock and authorise use" (on their network) - with
big penalties if you pull out early or "don't activate your phone
after 30 days". Naturally without the correct vendor all the iPhone
"extra web based features" probably won't work (they need something to
hold you to a provider who one the bidding!!).
Neither Voda or Optus can tell me much at present. Someone MUST know
but it's sure not their staff.
Time will tell and I'll hang out until the dust has settled. Will I
die because I don't have an iPhone day one? I hope not!
Regards
