Here's my experience from just last week installing Sibelius a music
notation program to get it working with a USB keyboard from Roland.
Warning: long!

Chris

On an iBook. 10.4.9
Click a few buttons as you usually do to install the app. Download
driver from Roland and install without issues. Everything works.
Takes maybe 10 minutes of hands on time (ie go off and do other
things while waiting for progress bars)

On a 6 year old eMac 10.4.9
Unable, at first, to install Sibelius because bottom parts of
dialogue box not visible. Frustrated and click randomly. App installs
but still perturbed about not being able to see the whole dialogue box.
Ring Sibelius tech support on a 13 number. This is a known issue
they say. Update the OS. Do that. All OK. Download Roland driver and
install without issue. Takes about 30 minutes of hands on time.

On a 4 year old PC (XP, SP2)
Install Sibelius without issues. Download driver from Roland. Will
not install properly. Go to read me as and follow these instructions.

# Make "Driver Signing" settings.

    1. Open the "Control Panel," and double-click "System."
       *	If the above icon cannot be found, click "Performance and
Maintenance," and then click "System."
    2. Click the "Hardware" tab, and then click [Driver Signing]. The
"Driver Signing Options" dialog box will appear.
    3. Make sure that "Driver Signing Options" is set to "Ignore." If
it is set to "Ignore," click [OK]. If not, make a note of the current
setting, change the setting to "Ignore," and then click [OK].
    4. Click [OK] to close "System Properties."

# Double-click Setup.exe.

[EDIT: there is not .exe in the package, so search for and download
another]

# The message "Roland PC-300 Driver will be installed on your
computer. ---" will appear. Click [Next].
*	If any other message appears, follow the directions of the message.
# Click [Next] to begin installation.
*	A dialog box will appear if "Driver Signing Options" was not set to
"Ignore" in step 4. In this case, refer to "Did you make "Driver
Signing" settings?" and proceed accordingly.
# The message "Ready to install the driver. ---" will appear.
*	If any other message appears, follow the directions of the message.
# Use a USB cable to connect the PC-300 to your computer, then power
up the PC-300.

< Windows 2000 users >
The driver will be installed automatically.
*	If "Driver Signing Options" was not set to "Ignore" in step 4, a
"Digital Signature Not Found" dialog box will appear. In this case,
refer to "Did you make "Driver Signing" settings?" and proceed
accordingly.
Proceed to step 13.

< Windows XP users >
Proceed to step 10.
# Wait until the lower right of the screen indicates "Found New
Hardware" and the "Found New Hardware Wizard" appears.
*	It may take some time for the "Found New Hardware Wizard" to appear.
# If you are asked whether you want to connect to Windows Update,
choose "No" and then click [Next].
# Choose "Install the software automatically (Recommended)" and click
[Next].
*	If "Driver Signing Options" was not set to "Ignore" in step 4, a
"Hardware Installation" dialog box will appear. In this case, refer
to "Did you make "Driver Signing" settings?" and proceed accordingly.
# If the "Completing the Found New Hardware Wizard" appears, Click
[Finish].
# Click [Close] to close the "Driver Setup" dialog box.
# If the "System Settings Change" dialog box appears, click [Yes] to
restart Windows.

Tried this a couple of times but without success. Try uninstalling
and reinstalling the driver package several times including plugging
and unplugging USB cable. No go.
Restart PC several times in between just in case. On the third or
fourth attempt it works but followed same procedure as instructed.
Keyboard and Sibelius see each other!
Time taken between 1 and a half to 2 hours HANDS ON.

Cost: an extra hour of labour (over and above the eMac) or
an well over an hour of labour in the case of the iBook.
