Dear Colleagues

Possibly today your school should get notice of the Rudd computer
funding

It ought include the following kind of wording

Applications from schools direct to DEEWR close on 4 April. DEEWR
will validate the applications and forward to the BGAs for assessment
by 11 April. BGAs are to return their recommendations to DEEWR by 30
April. Ministerial approvals will follow.

BGAs will assess the applications under four criteria provided by
DEEWR. The details of the criteria are yet to be developed. In
broad outline the criteria are:

1. The application ensures the desired minimum ratio of 2
students to 1 computer.
2. The school has or is developing an ICT plan and the
application is in that context.
3. The school has the physical facilities and infrastructure
to use the computers/equipment.
4. The application is supported by the school community.
On the criteria:

· Community support at minimum means the application is signed
off by a parent representative (P&F Chair, Board Chair, etc as for
the IOSP small projects).
· The funding is essentially for laptop or desk computers.
· If the ratio of computers is achieved at lower than $1,000
per computer, the balance can be directed to additional computers,
support facilities, infrastructure and related computer equipment.
· Schools are encouraged to spend the full amount available.

The note will in many respects sadly focus on acquiring just the
basic gear

The political reality is that funds have to allocated and spent in
this financial year - hence the very tight timeline

Suffice it say that a number of moves are underway to get the message
across to both government and the bureaucrats that successful
development entails far more buying boxes

There is a very real fear that there will be insufficient bids for
this round of funding

Always the pragmatist my strong recommendation to all on this list is
to get your bids in - even if it means using the federal funding for
the boxes and yours for the human development

Kind regards

Mal Lee
