Mac OSX software is regularly updated to take advantage of new
features and configurations of new hardware. It is however, generally
backwardly compatible with older hardware. (The only time I have seen
this not be the case is with the 10.4.11 on white/aluminium intel
iMacs.)

New computers should use at least the version of the software that was
supplied with them.

See - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25497

If you follow the Power PC and Intel links from the top of this page
you will see the software that ships with each computer, and which is
the minimum version that should be used with that model.

Late 2007 MacBook models should use 10.5 for proper functionality.
