<p><font face="Arial">Dear Colleague,</font> <br>
<font face="Arial">I’m
pleased to be able to let you know that we’ve made good progress
towards developing an innovative approach to get the best results for
NSW public schools from the Federal Government’s National Secondary
School Computer Fund.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">As I outlined in my last email on 5 March,
providing more computers or other ICT equipment has big and potentially
costly ramifications for us like compatibility within the system,
software licensing, power supply, storage and security, just to name a
few. </font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">Indeed the Commonwealth in its application
process and associated guidelines for the first round of funding asks
principals to take into account these issues in applying for funding.
The aim, of course, is to use the available funding to effectively
increase the numbers of computers available for students in years 9 to
12.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">I let you know in my last email that I</font><font
face="Times New Roman">’</font><font face="Arial">d asked Stephen
Wilson, Chief Information Officer, to work on identifying a solution
that gave us the best result as<i> a system</i> of public schools. </font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">Stephen has met with delegates from the Secondary
Principals’ Council, Primary Principals’ Association, Federation of
Parents and Citizens' Associations of NSW, Office of Schools,
Curriculum Directorate, Centre for Learning Innovation, Regional IT
managers and computer industry representatives.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">While it’s still a little early to fully describe
the proposed solution for us as a system of schools, I can assure you
that everyone who took part in meetings to discuss the issue have been
very supportive of the proposed solution. </font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">I got very positive feedback when I met last week
with the Secondary Principals’ Council and Primary Principals’
Association delegates.</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">Our overall plan is to move over time to a 1:1
ratio of computers to students in years 9 to 12, and use our combined
buying power to buy a specialised high-end educational laptop. </font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">But this will only work if we all act together,
so I ask schools that have been invited to apply for round one funding
to submit an application before the due date based on the attached pro
forma. </font></p>
<p><b><font face="Arial">Please apply for laptop computers, and only
for laptop computers. </font></b><br>
<b><font face="Arial">The
Commonwealth will give the department the funds associated with all
approved applications so we can arrange procurement and delivery. </font></b></p>
<p><b><font face="Arial">We will only endorse applications for laptop
computers in round one, and cannot offer technical and other support to
anything other than an application for laptops. </font></b></p>
<p><font face="Arial">For those technically minded I’ve attached a
short summary document which outlines the benefits of a specialised
high-end educational laptop. </font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">This approach – choosing laptops not other
equipment – has the full support of the Secondary Principals’
Association, the Federation of Parents and Citizens’ Associations and
the Primary Principals Association</font></p>
<p><font face="Arial">I’m sorry I can’t give you the full details of
our preferred approach but I will write as soon as I can to fully
describe it. </font></p>
